My name is Everit Tyshinski and, for a long time, I wanted to die. It wasn't always that way. I once was a reasonably competent attorney with a well-respected firm in Philadelphia. I lived in a posh suburb with the love of my life, Tara, where we were in happy pursuit of our first child. We met on the soccer pitch. An old college buddy had convinced me to play on his team in a gender-mixed, adult league. While warming up before the first game, an inadvertent pass struck me where no man should be struck, bringing me to my knees. When my eyes cleared, standing above me was a leggy, auburn blonde. She had asked me to pick up a pregnancy-test kit on the way home that night. But the firm was celebrating a big damages award at the local bar. In my drunken stupor, I had forgotten. So she ran out to the store instead. Everything changed after that.It was my fault. Soon after Tara left, I became obsessed with death. Though I wanted to kill myself, I just couldn't commit the act. The fantasy of suicide became my only companion in the back seat of the van I called home. Then, I found an ad soliciting for a soccer coach at a high school in North Philadelphia. They were averaging two homicides a day there. At last! The resolution to my cowardice! Thomas Paine High sat in one of the worst neighborhoods in North Philly. And like me, it was closer to dead than alive. We needed each other. They needed a soccer coach - I was the only one to have answered the ad - and I needed a place to die. I was well on my way to becoming a city statistic until I met those kids. That's when strange things began to happen.… (plus d'informations)

This book was very well written, but did not keep me interested at any point. In this book, you follow a suicidal man who has lost his wife as he teaches a high school soccer team how to play the game. While the book describes the game in a very beautiful way and gives lots of information about random topics along the way, I found it to very boring.

I learned a big amount of information about the game of soccer, and the author did a good job researching the topics and writing about that topics. Personally for me, I am not interested in sport books and books focusing on information, so this book did not pull me in. That being said, the lack of action and more discussions about information did not keep pulling me in.

I also found this book kind of ended at a random spot. I did not understand how this brought the book to a close, since it did not seem like it was ending in a smooth manner.

While reviewing this book, I also found numerous spelling and grammar mistakes. I am hoping this was one of the Advanced Reader's Copies. I didn't let that have a negative view towards my opinion of the book while I was reading it though, it just annoyed me when I couldn't read a sentence smoothly.

Overall, I was not fond of this book mainly because I am not the fan base for this kind of book. This book would be great for anybody who likes sports or learning new things from a fictional setting.

I received this book for free from Goodreads First Reads. ( )

I received this book via a GoodReads giveaway. A tough read at times with a slow moving and emotionally laden storyline, it ultimately details Everit's journey of recovery and self-discovery through an unexpected source when he signs up to coach a high school soccer team. His connection with the players on his team, and indeed their connection with him, was a wonderful transformation to read through. ( )
