L’histoire commence des décennies après le retrait de Fitz la vie publique. Le premier quart du livre est consacré à des retours sur le passé, pour poser les situations actuelles de chacun. Plusieurs personnages secondaires sont morts de vieillesse entre-temps, ou sont sur le point de le faire. Mais Fitz, lui, a peu vieilli suite aux soins majeurs reçu en urgence dans sa jeunesse.
Le rythme est lent, l’histoire s’étend sur des années. On voir passer les saisons, les gens arriver, vivre, et partir. La continuité se fait autour de Fitz et de sa fille Bee. Son arrivée, sa croissance, son enfance. Le point de vue alterne entre elle et Fitz, avec des commentaires croisés sur les situations.
Ce livre a une atmosphère plutôt sombre — emplie de morts poignantes, de cruauté humaines, et de doutes — mais pas pesante. Les héros souffrent, s’enfoncent et surnagent comme ils peuvent. Puis vient la lente remontée, très lente, mais qui permet à Fitz de se reconstruire et à Bee de se créer sa vie.
Et le Fool, dans tout ça ? Il est le fil rouge de l’histoire, parfois explicitement évoqué et discuté, toujours agissant de très loin par ses agents. Et son echo est omniprésent, dans les doutes du lecteur et dans les recoins du manoir.
Robin Hobb est vraiment une des meilleures auteurs du moment pour le médiéval-fantastique. Ses personnages sont profondément humains, pas niais, et furieusement attachants. (
