Colt, an experienced ER doctor, is arrogant, likes bullying people, and has awful taste in friends. He is also a devoted and driven medical professional, even though some of his internal thoughts about patients and the disregard he holds them in made me wonder how ethical he is. He treats the new nurse with absolute contempt and likes how upset Nico gets, thinking it makes him cute. I really wanted to shake him so he'd realize how hurtful that is.
Nico is the new nurse and looks years younger than his actual age, which leads to a lot of teasing. He is a fighter who manages his panic attacks, the disregard people show him, and his loneliness remarkably well. I did feel that he deserves much better than Colt, but with the strong attraction between them, it was unlikely he'd be able to resist. He also seems to be the only person who manages to make Colt stop what he's doing and teaches him the beginnings of respect. I can only wish Nico luck for the future; I think he's got his work cut out for him.
This fairly short story really feels to me like just the beginning of a relationship to me. The two main characters have some real issues to solve, both between each other and in their professional lives, but both solutions are only hinted at or ignored for the purposes of this snapshot. The real focus of the story is the personality of both men, their issues with themselves and each other, and the way they begin to deal with the situation. If you like aggressive, snarky characters who get struck by love only to discover there is a softer side to life, if you enjoy reading about doctors and nurses and the issues they run into at work, and if you're looking for a short read that is likely to infuriate and amuse you in equal measure, the you might like this free novella.
