Did the longbow secure victory at Agincourt or are the English just better in mud? Did Queen Elizabeth I know the Armada had capitulated when she delivered one of the most inspiring speeches in all history? Where did Wellington meet his Waterloo? Was the vote to leave the European Union Britain's modern Peasants' Revolt? Colin Brown travels to the sites of some of the most significant events in British history to skewer inaccuracies embedded in popular parlance and reveal the truth behind the stories that make Britain great. This is a book that discusses the bits that were left out or covered over with daisychain stitched cloths, because they didn't add much to building a national psyche. Not exactly revisionist because Mr Brown does point out even if what we were taught in school was pretty selective when it comes to prioritising, the inherent spin has helped enormously down the ages.
Front-loaded in personal interest there are subtle satiric prods at Starky and Schama, and I for one always welcome our soft satiric overlords.
