Her Dragon To Slay was a fantastical, romance novel all about dragons.

Warning: Spoilers ahead! Be warned.

I found this book free on Amazon, so I figured - why not? I loved Katie MacAlister's dragon series, and I wanted to fill my shelf with a few more books about dragons, so this seemed like the perfect fit! And, indeed it was! This book was fun, delightful and full of ooey, gooey romance.

It's definitely your "typical" fantasy romance - they fall in love fast, there's some really hot sex scenes and there's some fantasy and action mixed in as well.

Julia Mills does a great job weaving the dragon half of the story with the romance side. I loved the mythology Julia created for this world, and I would like to see more of it in the future. It can seem a little cheesey if you're expecting an Oscar worthy styled novel, but to me it was fun and entertaining. It kept me interested to the point I devoured it in one sitting.

There are also many funny and comedic moments mixed in. This is not a serious fantasy novel, it's lighthearted and fun.

So, you may be asking at this point - what's the cons?
1. Character development is low (but it's a book that's less than 200 pages and involves a lot more romance involved)
2. Repetitive. Yeah, this book is a little repetitive. If you're just reading it for a fun ride, it's cool. It didn't bug me because I wanted an escape from reality, but to some people this might be a major no-no.
3. Potential rape?... Rayne gets a little to sexual with a sleeping Kyndel, and we're not to sure if she actually "wanted" it despite her body behaving... But later she's madly in love with him in about two seconds, so it could be warranted? I don't even know. That part left me feeling really icky reading it. It just didn't seem right.
4. Male oriented story. This one kind of bugged me, and looking at other reviewers it bugged them too. The woman exists for the man in this story, and it definitely fills some fantasies for some people but in today's culture it doesn't sit perfectly. This can be a con or a pro, depending on how you want to look at the story.

Overall, this book was delightful. It had me whisked away to another world and not worrying about reality. It'd be a great book to read if you love romance, dragons or a sexy read.

It starts out great. Unfortunately it deteriorates as the story continues. The problems start off with a few editing problems, like the wrong word used in a sentence. Then unnecessary information and repetition of thoughts that hinder the flow of the story. The way Rayne speaks to Kyndal is beyond sappy and childish. Rayne and his men are suppose to be hardened warriors fighting a dangerous foe, but it is hard to take them seriously.
All these things made it difficult to finish the story. I wanted to really like it, and the beginning was great. Alas, not a great start to this series. It needed more adult conversation, more action in and better written fight scenes. Less sugary sweet talk. I think to much emphasis was placed on the sex scenes and not enough in developing the story to adult level reading. ( )

Just too weird

I have read a lot of paranormal romance and a lot of authors go for the fated mates plot and I'm okay with that. I'm even okay with love at first sight. What I'm not okay with is people coping feels while the other is asleep. It's creepy and wrong.

I think the plot was okay but it felt off somehow. ( )

~ 3.5 Her Dragon To Slay Stars ~

Her Dragon To Slay is book one in Dragon Guards series by Julia Mills. I love dragon shifter books, so I picked this one up. I enjoyed this dragon tale, but some of the writing put me off.

Kyndel, a human. I enjoyed her and the witty banter that she does with Rayne (mate) and the other Dragon Guardsman. She has some type of connection to plants and healing, which is not fully talked about, but mentioned. She's on the feminine side, but not a wilting lily or damsel in distress.

Rayne, dragon shifter and commander of the Dragon Guard. I enjoyed his strong protective instincts for his mate and those he protects. He is a fearless leader.

The plot moves quickly as most insta-love books tend to do. We get a cast of very hot sexy dragon shifters, that I really would like to learn more about. Each have their own unique personalities and colorful dragons. I was concerned that the Hunters and Wizards the author gave us where/are to week to kill the dragons off, but the author threw in a much better evil villein that will give the Dragon Guardsman a run for their money. The sex is hot if not sometimes a little vanilla, but still good to read.

What put me off was how many times the author said “the Universe had made her, just for him”, “the Universe did not make mistakes” or that they are “1000lb dragons”. Ya I get it. I’m hoping that this is not a recurring theme throughout the books. The only other thing that distracted me was the long winded monolog's going on in the characters heads. Maybe I’ll get use to this from the author. Only time will tell.

As first books go in a series Her Dragon To Slay was a descent start. We have an underlining plot that seams interesting and the Dragons are enjoyable.

Omg, Absolutely mesmerizing

I can't say enough good things about this book!! Never have I felt such a kinship with the character Kyndle. She is strong willed woman who meets her soul mate Rylin, the beautiful Dragon shifter. A women's must read!!! Hot scenes in vivid details is just WOW. I ,myself even felt treasured after reading this. ( )
