In the Prolong, Kord Herrick is manning his post as chief of security. He's watching the cameras in his Adrian Romulus's bedchamber. Kord was 30 years older than his master, but both looked young for their age. According to Romulus, the well known Jew born in Bethlehem would soon become a footnote in history. Kord called the butler & went for the daily news articles.
The story begins at 4:15 PM Thursday November 5, 1998, when Daniel Prentice is out fishing on Trout Lake. His uncle had told him of a large pike that was supposed to be in the lake that was considered to be uncatchable. Daniel hoped to catch the monster, but today was not the day. His picture had recently been on the cover of Newsweek because he headed the team that was to find the Y2K fix for the First Manhattan Bank. When that had been announced, the bank's CEO left for Paris & Daniel had gone to the lake. Now he was leaving the lake for the cabin to check his email. The first was from his mother & he decided to schedule an hour for a phone conversation with her. The next was from his friend, Brad, who had saved his life in a Desert Storm mission, was about to be married & Daniel was to be his best man. During their recuperation from the mission, they had agreed that whoever married first would pay for the other's honeymoon. Now Brad thought Daniel should take a vow of celibacy. The third email was from Howard, one of his business partners, expressing that a fix for Y2K had been found. A program had been written to find hidden dates in the computer code. Daniel climbed into his car to leave for the plane...things were looking up!
Daniel's company, Prentice Technology, was located in Mount Vernon, NY. The cabby didn't think anyone was there, but Daniel knew better. The weather was cold, & he was glad he was dressed for the wilderness. He went to his office & started his computer named Roberta, which asked what he wanted to do. The computer put him in contact with Dr. Howard Kriegel, who had sent the email telling the good news about the program. He was going for a demonstration of the program. ( )
