Michael Eaton takes a long look at the origins of Chinatown - both in it's portrayal of California's history and the gathering talents of Robert Evans, Robert Towne, and Roman Polanski - before guiding us through the imagery and nuance of the screenplay and direction. The attention Eaton pays to pivotal scenes that might otherwise seem like throwaway moments, such as Jake's telling of an off-color joke, pays off with a detailed look at the layered narrative of one of cinema's most enduring films. A must read for Polanski fans and film buffs alike. ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique

This study analyzes 'Chinatown' in the context of the figure of the detective in literature and film from Sophocles to Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock. In the account of 'Chinatown''s narrative development Michael Eaton seeks to uncover both its relationship to the pessimism of American cinema in the 1970s and its veritably mythical structure.
