As a fan of Buroker's Emperor's Edge series, I was interested to see what she would do with a more modern-day setting, and I was not disappointed. Torrent is a fun romp with interesting characters and an intriguing setting. It stands alone, but leaves lots of scope for more books in the series. I'd definitely be interested in reading more! ( ) Well, that was a lot of stuff combined (aliens, tomb raiders, x-files,...) and wrapped in a thick layer of sarcasm. I kind of liked it but I am sure I will not read the other books in the series. Still, I give Ms Buroker another chance - or I have already given her a chance - since I have a few of her other books lying on my TBR shelf. I always have a hard time categorizing Lindsay Buroker's books and that's because they continuously defy my genre expectations. I thought this would be urban fantasy, and in many ways it was. Delia and her partners Simon and Temi end up hunting a mysterious creature, and being pursued by mysterious men. But then the story takes a science fiction twist, because instead of monsters native to earth we might be dealing with monsters and men from another world. And somehow the urban fantasy and scifi meld wonderfully. As usual, Buroker creates some wonderful characters. Delia, the archeologist who carries a whip and mocks herself over it, even as she's studied to make it into something useful and practical. Temi, the retired and injured pro tennis player, who vanished from Delia's life when they were young and who might now have a chance to change her entire life. And Simon, wearing socks with his sandals, and inventing amazing technology even as he photographs monsters to drive traffic to their website. And, being a Lindsay Buroker story, they're a team and found family, and I can only hope more people show up to join them. (Like maybe the man from the cave? Or one of the other men?) I'm hooked already. I'll be there for the next book--and hopefully many others. Delia provides the brawn and the archeology know-how, while best-pal Simon provides the geek-factor. Assisted by new partner, former tennis star Artemis "Temi", the pair make up Rust & Relics, a small, mostly online business that resembles appears to have it's roots in the reality show Pickers. Well, if Pickers poked around in caves, slept in their van, and stumbled across decapitated bodies and aliens on a more regular basis... Buroker's venture into the contemporary realm feels a bit like Scooby Doo and the gang meets the Fringe. I really wanted to like it more than I did, and would probably read another installment, but I think this series needs a bit more tinkering. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

When Delia chose to major in archaeology, she imagined herself as the female Indiana Jones of the Southwest. She didn't imagine herself crawling through abandoned mine shafts, scrounging for rusty pickaxes and gold pans to sell on auction sites, but Indiana Jones didn't have to make student loan payments. Scouring the mountains of Arizona with Simon, her best friend and computer geek extraordinaire, Delia dreams of turning their scavenging enterprise into a legitimate business. More, she longs to earn the respect of peers who shun her for turning into a treasure hunter. What she doesn't dream of is stumbling across a decapitated body in an old mine near Prescott. Something dangerous has come to the mountains, and two Harley-riding strangers are the only ones who seem to have a clue. They speak a language Delia has never heard and carry mysterious artifacts she's never seen. Investigating these strangers might lead her to discoveries that change the face of archaeology forever... or it might lead her and her best friend into a deadly monster's lair.
