“You know, sometimes a man can be so consistently good that people take him for granted. I remember another man kinda like that. Coached football and wore a houndstooth hat.”

Oh well, if you are an Alabama football fan of the 1960s and like your stories to end all wrapped in a nice package, you will probably enjoy this novel. ( )

An excellent legal thriller. Tom McMurtrie (a/k/a "The Professor") wrote the book on evidence in the state of Alabama, is suddenly forced to resign from the University of Alabama law school by a former protégé (now prosecutor), thought to be a friend. At the same time, he is approached by an old flame about a wrongful death case, where she has lost her descendants in a catastrophic accident with a speeding truck driver. Having not litigated for 40 years, Tom refers the case to a local attorney, Rick Drake, whose promising law career submarined after a scuffle with Tom after a mock trial. With the capable assistance of Tom's law student Dawn, Drake starts to compile his case against the trucking company for violating regulations, but the ruthless owner interferes at every stage, eventually forcing Drake to ask Tom for help. Some sections may be too graphic for readers. I especially liked the support provided to Tom by his dog, his student Bocephus, and the homage to the 1961 Alabama Crimson Tide, who surrendered only 25 points that season on its way to a national championship. Good legal thriller. Interesting plot and I didn't know how they'd pull it off. I would read the next in the series. ( )
