Un agente dei servizi segreti in pensione sente impellere da dentro una vocazione di scrittore. Non ha mai letto un romanzo in vita sua, ma non si scoraggia e si mette alla scuola dello scrittore di grido della sua città. Tenta di carpirgli, con disarmante ingenuità e ammirevole ostinazione, i riti e i segreti che faranno diventare anche lui un grande autore - e far dimenticare il suo ingombrante passato di spione. Siamo a Khartoum (anche se la città non è particolarmente riconoscibile) e il libro contiene in tono di commedia, oltre al finale a sorpresa, una satira sociale e politica che non poteva mancare in un’opera di questo tipo.
Lettura molto piacevole. Finalista al Premio internazionale della fiction araba 2011, è il secondo titolo sudanese in edizione italiana. ( )

The Grub Hunter, also published as The Hunter of the Crysalises.

The Grub Hunter was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2011 and subsequently translated into English. The author is Sudanese and, although it never actually states that it is set in Sudan, it seems reasonable to assume this.

Abdallah Harfash (Farfar), a former secret service agent, has been forcibly retired after a injury received while at work. He decides to write a book, to become a novelist. To this end he starts to frequent a cafe that he knew from his surveillance work, to be a haunt of writers. The author known as A.T. holds court here and it takes Farfar a while to gain his trust.

Then there is a diversion while one of A.T's writings, a short novel set in Russia, is inserted into the main book. I'm not quite sure what purpose this book-within-a-book served but it was certainly confusing.

The reader wonders whether Farfar is going to successfully become an author and the ending is somewhat surprising. But it was the irony within the book that fascinated me. The unnamed country is a police state, with the police receiving huge respect (fear) from the citizens. Once Farfar leaves the secret service he suddenly realises that he has lost his position in society. The book seller no longer reserves books for him and his tailor can no longer give a delivery date for his clothing. What's more, he now finds himself the subject of scrutiny by his own secret service as he begins to mix with writers and suspected dissidents.

Not an easy read and enjoyed more by those who read it in the original Arabic, which suggests that the translation may be partly to blame. However, it was interesting and gave rise to some fascinating discussion in my multi-cultural book group. ( )

فكرة غريبة ولكن لما لا ؟
هل هو اقل من ذلك الإسكافي الفقير في رواندا حين كتب رواية حول الحرب الأهلية
او
بائعة الهوى التائبة في سايغون التى كتبت روايتين رائعتين عن حياتها القديمة حين كانت نكرة في زقاق مظلم

البداية كانت تبدو مشجعة ولكن الرواية فى مجملها محبطة

مملة الى اقصى درجة تميل الى التكرار فى كثير من المقاطع

حتى اذا كانت تحمل اسقاط سياسى او اجتماعى هذا لا يعنى ان اتغاضى عن انها لم تكن ممتعة بالمرة

ولا حتى اعطتى نبذة عن حياة المجتمع السودانى


لم تترك فى اى اثر

لم اتامل او افكر او اتسائل كانت مضيعة للوقت

والسؤال الوحيد الذى طرحته لماذا اصر الكاتب على ان يصف صاحب المكتبة بالمسيحى

طوال الرواية تتردد بعض الجمل مثل أهداني المسيحي

كان من الممكن ان يدرج اى من الاشارات الى دينه بطريقة غير مباشرة

اذا كان يصر على ذلك

رغم ان ديانته واصراره على ابرازها فى روايته لم تساهم فى البناء الدرامى

اذا كان الهدف هو ان يثبت ان هناك مساحة صداقة فى المجتمع بين المسلم والمسيحى
فهو فى رايى لم يوفق فى ذلك

فلا يجب ان يعرف الشخص بدينه
او بعرقه

فلا يجوز ان يكون وصفه وابعاد شخصيته فقط هو انه المسيحى ( )

يندر ان انطلق لقراءة كتاب جديد، أو موضع اهتمام جماهيري حاليّ وهذا الامر ينطبق على صائد اليرقات التي رشحت لجائزة البوكر،
الرواية لطيفة بشكل عامّ تذكرني بهموم شخصية مرتبطة بالكتابة، تتحدث عن الامجاد المفاجأة لمن يسمون نفسهم كتابا ويخدمهم جمهور أو طبالين اذا استخدمت مصطلح سيء جداً !
يبدو على امير تاج السرّ انه شخص مطلع ، لكن في بعض المواضع احسست بأنه يتحدث كثيرا في محاولة ليظهر لنا هذا الاطلاع ، فتصبح الجمل وكأنها معلومات عامة محشورة على التوالي ..
لم يكن سيئا ولم يكن مثالياً لكنه خفيف جدا ويمكن الانتهاء منه في جلسه واحدة . .
اعجبت كثيرا بالنهاية ، وكانت على قدر التشويق الذي بدأ من منتصف الكتاب والانتظار .
