This book provides readers with informational facts about pigs. Male pigs are called boars and females and sows and have the highest IQ of any common household pet. Pigs have four toes on each foot but they use the two large middle toes to walk. They have stout bodies, course hair, and very sensitive snouts. Pigs do not sweat and are easily sunburned so they stay in the mud or shade to avoid getting sunburned and to stay cool.
Personal Reaction
My sister and I had a miniature pot belly pig growing up and we loved playing with her. She was very smart and sweet. She would let us dress her up and she took walks with us around the farm. This book reminded me of the great memories we had with our pig.
Extension Ideas
1.The students could pretend to have a pig as a pet and draw a picture of something they would do together.
2.As a class we could compare and contrast the different types of pigs.
3.We could discuss other animals we might see on a farm and learn interesting facts about them.
