The students learn a lot about apples and apple orchards—including how apples are harvested, how cider is made, and what the different varieties of apples are. They also try to solve a riddle Mr. Tiffin gives them: "Show me a little red house with no windows an no door, but with a star inside." An accompanying activity for this book: Slice and taste different varieties of apples ... and solve the riddle! This is a cute story about a class that goes on a field trip to an apple orchard. Tara is the main character; she tends to daydream and walk a little slower than everyone else. When they get to the apple orchard, Mr. Tiffin, their teacher, gives them a riddle to solve. Throughout this story, the children are constantly problem solving and trying to figure out the riddle. At the end, Tara solves the riddle. I think this is a great story for young children because sometimes they get frustrated and give up when tasks are too difficult. The persistence and curiosity the children have in this story show students that solving problems is not always easy but through trial and error you can figure it out. This book is playful, humorous, and a child-friendly classroom story, the students learn a lot about apples and apple orchards. How apples are harvested, how cider is made, and what the different varieties of apples are, while trying to solve a riddle. The book also celebrates how some children learn differently than others. This would be great for Synthesizing in a 1st grade classroom.
