Frankie Bailey introduces readers to a fabulous new protagonist and an Alice in Wonderland-infused crime in this stunning mystery, which kicks off an exciting new series set in the near future. The year is 2019, and a drug used to treat soldiers for post-traumatic stress disorder, nicknamed "Lullaby," has hit the streets. Swallowing a little pill erases traumatic memories, but what happens to a criminal trial when the star witness takes a pill and can't remember the crime? When two women are murdered in quick succession, biracial police detective Hannah McCabe is charged with solving the case. In spite of the advanced technology, including a city-wide surveillance program, a third woman is soon killed, and the police begin to suspect that a serial killer is on the loose. But the third victim, a Broadway actress known as "The Red Queen," doesn't fit the pattern set by the first two murders. With the late September heat sizzling, Detective Hannah McCabe and her colleagues on the police force have to race to find the killer in a tangled web of clues that involveAlice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz,and Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Fast-paced and original, this is a one-of-a-kind mystery from an extremely talented crime writer.… (plus d'informations)

the author's confidence in the idea that this was going to become a series led to some things which make it less appealing as a stand alone. A mysterious boyfriend of the main character introduced on page 216 only to disappear again immediately, for example. I felt trying to get both lice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz to fit into the narrative was stretching it. Also found the attempt to blend mystery and sci-fi not particularly convincing, simply calling blogging threading and tablets orbs doesn't make for a convincing alternative reality. However, most of these things are probably coming from a combination of inexperience and trying to do too much. ( )

An enjoyable police procedural, reminded me while reading it of a Law & Order Criminal Intent episode. An interesting choice of setting, 2019, with some much improved technology in the world, but well done and realistic rather than being over the top. Nice to see a future setting without too much sci-fi techno stuff in.

The novel focuses on three murders, two of which seem related and a third of a famous Broadway actress which has a few traits of the others but not all and the novel focuses on the two detectives putting together the clues and figuring out who is responsible.

It was interesting enough, focusing on the detectives research efforts and talking to various suspects and putting it all together...and there was a enough mystery and clues thrown in to make it engaging. Though I did find it dragging a little towards the end.

The story was good enough that I didn't actually guess who the killer was until it was revealed but it felt...a little bit...sort of...oh that's it? when they were finally caught.

Over all, a good read and I would definitely read something from this author again.

An actor known as the Red Queen is murdered in Albany, New York,, the third woman to die in a similar way. The story is set in a near future when surveillance is ubiquitous but many of the cameras don't work, so the police have to fall back on shoe-leather sleuthing. Having visited Albany not too long ago, I enjoyed the familiar setting and the almsot familiar future.

The Red Queen Dies is a Hannah McCabe murder mystery set in 2019. Three women have been murdered and they all somehow have the Alice in Wonderland story in common. Hannah and her partner Detective Baxter's job is to find out what the connection is and why the women were murdered. Having the story set 6 years into the future made the story just a bit scifi enough to be believable, meaning the advancements in technology that were in the book certainly could be real. This novel was easy to read and suspenseful enough to keep my attention. I do enjoy a good murder mystery and love women detectives, especially ballsy ones, who are not afraid to handle the bureaucracy that are always in a police procedural books. A side story focus's on Hannah's brother Adam and her father Angus. Adam is without the use of his legs due to an incident when Hannah was a child. A young man broke into the house to rob the place and was shot and killed by Hannah, leaving nightmarish memories for both. I hope that the author has more in the works as I would definitely read another book by her. ( )

Book Review & Giveaway: I took one look at the book cover for The Red Queen Dies by award-winning author Frankie Y. Bailey and was intrigued. Was this a horror novel, a fantasy novel, a mystery? I had to learn more. Then I read the concept when I was approached to take part in the Partners in Crime virtual book tour, and jumped on it with both feet because the concept is so unusual!

There is no short answer to what comprises The Red Queen Dies. It’s a mystery/thriller police procedural with strong ties to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Beyond the Looking Glass. It also gives a nod to The Wizard of Oz. Lastly, it’s a near-future novel but it has links to Lincoln’s assassination.

Sound complicated and unlikely? Well complicated yes, but it actually all makes perfect sense in a down-the-rabbit-hole kind of way when you’re reading it. I’m just glad I wasn’t the police officer assigned to this case. And instead of loping off heads like the Red Queen, we’ll play the Cheshire Cat and gift one of you with a copy in our giveaway at http://popcornreads.com/?p=6387. ( )

et in Albany, N.Y., in 2019, this intriguing series opener from Bailey (Death’s Favorite Child and three other Lizzie Stuart mysteries) introduces biracial police detective Hannah McCabe...Readers will enjoy this mildly disorienting future, in which much remains the same (e.g., the city still can’t get no respect) while much has changed (e.g., the Yankees have been on a losing streak for years).
