Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

Camping can be murder. Oh, sure, there's the stunning scenery, socializing with old friends and new acquaintances, amazing food cooked outside, and so on. But what if a dead body turns up on one of your hikes-for-fun-and fitness?

Frannie and Larry Shoemaker, retired baby boomers, are looking forward to a relaxing Fourth of July weekend with friends in beautiful Bat Cave State Park in Eastern Iowa. They begin with a wonderful meal and some laughs over the antics of nearby novice campers. But when someone kills the campground host and Frannie's group discovers the body, their favorite getaway becomes a quasi-prison, and the eccentricities often seen in a campground are viewed as suspicious behavior. A severe weather threat and the possibility that the murderer could be either a campground resident or an intruder from the outside compounds the danger. Frannie, while naturally curious, is warned off by her retired-cop husband, but still stumbles on information making her a target of the killer. At the same time, Frannie is working through the recent loss of her mother and an uncomfortable relationship with one of her own camping group.

Bats and Bones is an Indie BRAGMedallion honoree and is the first of the Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mystery series. At the end of each chapter is a camping tip, some serious, some not-so-much.

This book was a quick, enjoyable cozy mystery. I found the characters interesting and would read more by Karen Nortman. This series promises to be a good light mystery, perfect for breaks between heavier reads. Rebecca Roberts does a fantastic job narrating. I enjoyed listening to her bring the characters and story to life. ( )

Better than some in this series when it comes to clues. As always, a cozy novel that is enjoyable to read. ( )

Three couples, Frannie and Larry, Jane Ann and Michael, Donna and Roy meet at a favorite campground for the 4th of July. Newbie" campers arrive parking across from them. Of course they make the first time mistakes. While our campers look on with smiles on their faces the camp host goes ballistic on them. Then bikers arrive trailing the popup trailers and the host is on them for the noise. It appears that the camp host Maeve Schlumm is very confrontational with all using the campground even our campers who are berated for too loud of music, though it is before 10pm. On the first hike of the weekend our campers discover the body of Maeve Schlumm. Frannie puts on her thinking cap and starts sleuthing. This is a cozy murder mystery without all the quirky, unnecessary characters. More in the style of Jane Marple, observation and light sleuthing go hand in hand. An enjoyable read. ( )

Camping and Murder Mysteries go together

Loved this little story. It has a great storyline and fleshed out characters. Anybody who has ever camped out will relate to this story. Looking forward to to the next one in the series ( )
