After the Hunters had been dealt with by the end of the previous book in the series, I was curious what new evil would raise its head to make life difficult for the Dark Hollow pack. And, not surprisingly, there was plenty that came up. There were also a lot of links to some of the earlier books, tying up some loose ends and adding pieces of the puzzle. At the same time, it is clearly the start of a set of new stories, with the focus on one of the other pack branches, the one in Tennessee. All in all, a very interesting volume just from the point of view of the continuing story. Adding the story around this particular couple just made it even better.

Tucker is a detective, and he may be tough but he is also lonely. One-night stands are it for him though, he cannot imagine having a relationship. Not least because some of his colleagues are somewhat homophobic. All that changes when he meets Gavin. Considerable chaos ensues as he learns about himself and tries to maintain some sort of independence in the face of being the alpha's mate and a "pet". It's quite a challenge, but Tucker is somehow better equipped to deal with much of it than any of the previous mates.

Gavin is as macho, stubborn, and narrow-minded as any of the other alphas and dominant wolves we've seen. Different from them, he is able and willing to learn much faster, but then, he also has a far more resistant "pet" on his hands. The standard approach just doesn’t seem to work, and he gets extremely frustrated – and nasty. Not that it works, and Tucker's counter-measures made me laugh. In the end, and deep-down, Gavin is a nice guy though, so there is hope.

If you like stories that mix the romance with quite some mystery and suspense, if you enjoy reading about two stubborn men trying to out-stubborn each other while dealing with their raging libidos, and if you're looking for another story about the Dark Hollow wolf packs, then you will probably like this novella.

New challenges and threats have surfaced for the Dark Hollow pack. This time we get to meet Tucker who is a natural pet but has no idea who or what he is. As a law enforcement officer he doesn't really seem the subby type at all. When he ends up the mate of alpha Gavin they both have a lot of adjusting to do. It's great to see those subs standing up and taking care of themselves again. ( )
