4th in Lei Crime Series. Lei is with FBI in her probationary period. She is having trouble working as a team. FBI must find group of kids who are targeting the 1% in Hawaii. The kids are stealing from the rich and giving to agencies who are need of funding. No one is hurt until the leader is caught; then it starts to get ugly. Pretty good read.

Review: Broken Ferns by Toby Neal.

It’s a great detective story with surprising twists and turns, pure enthusiastic aura and completely aspirating characters, fully developed with depth and breathtaking of emotions, set in the trouble wonderland of Hawaii. The story was well written and flowed along gradually and smoothly.

Toby Neal’s main character, detective Lei Texeira who is a new agent to the FBI has a fiery temper and perpetual disregard for authority. Throughout the story she makes some major breakthroughs without losing identity of who she is coming from a multicultural heritage along with a tragic upbringing, a failed relationship and an abandoned Rottweiler that still haunted her.

Lie is assigned a case of a stolen ultra light airplane and a string of subsequent robberies. As she pursues the “unsub”, who is smart feisty character, which will surprise the reader, through the Hawaiian Islands with creditable courage and gallant action. The author entwines mystery and enticing adventure to create the insightful character, “The Smiley-Bandit” who was only advocating for the Islands unfortunate. I fell in love with that character……

The anticipation of “what’s next” grows page by page and surprised the reader many times. The action is non-stop throughout the story and flows effortless to the end. There are a few breathtaking moments amidst the story such as vandalizing, graffiti on buildings, graffiti on a few classic mint antique cars, a bomb exploding, a person jumping out of a moving helicopter, a drowned Chihuahua brought back to life by CPR, and last but not least I have to mention the murder scenes…..
