( ) Little Bear asks Mama to help him assemble a whole bunch of art supplies so that he can make her a card, making sure to say "thank you" each time she provides him with some essential item. This simple and sweet book reinforces use of good manners by repeating the phrase "thank you" and even throwing in a "you're welcome" at the end. (It could go a little further by changing the main character's language from the demanding "I need" to the requesting "May I," but I guess that's a little more complex than the author wanted to go into for this title ?) It is also introduces some other vocabulary for very young children such as paint, brush, etc. This book isn't much to write home about, but it's a good short read to share with the youngest listeners (infants and toddlers). The touching relationship between the Little Bear and Mama Bear is quite a nice addition to the manners lesson. The colorful illustrations have just enough detail for an adult to point them out to the young reader without the child being overstimulated by them. Young Reader Reaction: My daughter was engaged as I read her the book. She really seemed to enjoy the book, and I wasn't surprised, since it has a cute bear, bright illustrations, and a story that moves at a fast pace. Adult Reader Reaction: I liked the book! It is a sweet, simple, short story, which is perfect for babies and toddlers. Pros: The best thing about this book is that it teaches children to say "thank you" without doing so in an overly didactic way.
