This book is a great story that is a combination of non-fiction and fiction. Although it is about talking bears, the story describes the cycle of leaves and why leaves change colors throughout the different seasons. It introduces the science behind what kids may think is magic when leaves turn colors. It's a great book for the Fall!

This story explains the biology of a tree and answers common questions. The characters in the story, including Buddy and his mom, go on walks to collect and learn about leaves and their functions during each season. You can find humor about trees in this book as Buddy tells jokes. There also contains some activities at the end that you could do that pertain to trees.

This is a wonderful example of a very well put together informational book. The author uses correct and precise information on how trees are grown as she embeds some fantasy in the form of a personified family of bears. As the child bear is curious about leaves, Momma Bear takes him on a leaf walk throughout each season to learn more of why trees have leaves, and what their purpose is. Ultimately, readers will learn how leaves become food for trees, why they change to varying shades throughout the fall season, and why they looses their leaves during the fall and grow back in the spring.

Mama Bear takes her cub out all four seasons, starting with spring, to take a look at leaves. They look at buds, parts of leaves, how they grow, different shapes, and how they change. This gives simple explanations of what happens (with chlorophyll, etc.), and has a few common leaves in the back. This might be a good introduction to teaching about plants. ( )
