Set in early New Zealand, Tom had sent his only child, Charlotte, to be looked after by nuns while he panned for enough gold to be able to buy a small farm. Unfortunately he was attacked by thieves and was thought to have been killed. WhenToms partner Tama tells Charlotte the bad news, Charlotte changes her appearance to a boy's and joins Tama droving a herd of cattle over the rugged Arthur's Pass to the West Coast so she can find her father. On the drove she proves her skills and makes a new friend who has his own secrets. She soon realises the dangers on the trail are not just from the land and the animals she works with, and will she ever find out what happened to her father? ( ) Charlotte's father has had to leave her at a convent while he goes gold prospecting on the West Coast of New Zealand. Rumours of his death reach 14-year-old Charlotte but she doesn't believe them and determines to visit his claimsite herself. She runs away, disguising herself as boy in order to join a droving team taking cattle over the dangerous Southern Alps. Helping along the way are her father’s friend, Tama, and Joseph, an American boy. What she uncovers when she reaches the claim site will leads her to her father but also into danger. Another fantastic offering from Tauranga author Susan Brocker. A great adventure tale set in an historical landscape that is an important part of New Zealand's heritage. Set on the West coast of New Zealand this is the story of Charlotte, 14, who has left the safety of the convent to search for her father after he has disappeared from his claim site. She cuts off her lovely hair and disguises herself as a boy so she can join the cattle drove over the Southern Alps. Charlotte meets with danger along the way; but with the help of her father’s friend, Tama, and American, Joseph, she gets to the claim site in one piece. Only to find that all is not what it seems. I just loved the way this story brought to forefront the hard and inspiring times of the South Island of New Zealand in the 1860s. Brocker has used her skills to write a fast moving novel which will catch the attention of its readers from the first. Highly recommended to readers over 11 years old. Tom was forced to leave his daughter Charlotte at a convent whilst he went gold prospecting on the West Coast but when Charlotte hears rumours of his death she runs away to try and find him. Dressed as a boy, she joins a team of drovers taking cattle on the dangerous road over the Southern Alps. This is a great adventure story set in an exciting period of New Zealand history. It would appeal to teens and tweens and would make a great class read-aloud. Charlotte's father was attacked and kidnapped at his goldfield. His friend Tama told Charlotte that her father was presumed dead and she felt she needed to find out for herself, so ran away from her boarding school joined a cattle drive to the West Coast across the Southern Alps, in her quest to find her father. Good teenage read. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
