A MASKED MAN . . . Winter Makepeace lives a double life. By day he's the stoic headmaster of a home for foundling children. But the night brings out a darker side of Winter. As the moon rises, so does the Ghost of St. Giles-protector, judge, fugitive. When the Ghost, beaten and wounded, is rescued by a beautiful aristocrat, Winter has no idea that his two worlds are about to collide. A DANGEROUS WOMAN . . . Lady Isabel Beckinhall enjoys nothing more than a challenge. Yet when she's asked to tutor the Home's dour manager in the ways of society-flirtation, double-entendres, and scandalous liaisons-Isabel can't help wondering why his eyes seem so familiar-and his lips so tempting. A PASSION NEITHER COULD DENY During the day Isabel and Winter engage in a battle of wills. At night their passions are revealed . . . But when little girls start disappearing from St. Giles, Winter must avenge them. For that he might have to sacrifice everything-the Home, Isabel . . . and his life.
Isabel comes across as pretty self-centered, and Winter.. well, he's almost too good for his own good.
What stood out for me was Winter's caring and non-judgmental nature. It was refreshing to see him not dwelling on Isabel's past but rather focused on having her in his future.
The story unfolds with a perfect blend of steaminess and romance. ( )
We finally get to learn more about Winter! I love him so much and it was nice to see more into him outside of his usual somber self. The mystery in this was also compelling and I love that we get a side story with Joseph Tinbox and Peach. ( )
I liked this book overall but I think I might have enjoyed it more if I had read the other books in the series. There were a lot of characters and it was difficult to keep everyone straight. That might have been less troublesome if I had read the books about those characters.
The feel of the times was fairly well done but not as intense as in some other books by this author. The relationship between the hero and heroine was sweet but I think I might have liked it better without the secret identity element. They did have good chemistry though and I liked how realistically the older heroine was written.
I definitely would like to go back and read the rest of the series.
I received this book free from netGalley for review. ( )

This is for my favorite brother-in-law, Charles, an intriguingly talented interdisciplinary artist with interests in dance, theater, and visual arts who, nevertheless, does not mind slumming in the occasional romance novel video.
