Predictable, but a nice read all the same ( ) Adele Talbot's mother Rose makes her life a misery. When her younger sister is run over and killed, 12-year-old Adele is blamed by her mother who tries to kill her before being restrained and sent to an asylum. Her step-father doesn't want her, so Adele is sent to a children's home, but runs away to avoid being raped. Adele had found an old envelope in her mother's belongings with her grandmother's address on it. She walks to the Rye Marshes, but by the time she finds her grandmother (who didn't know she existed!) is very ill. Gradually her terse grandmother nurses her back to health and Adele finally finds a place to call home. She also finds a friend in Michael Bailey. When they are older, World War II interrupts their lives. Adele becomes a nurse and Michael joins the RAF. But when Adele's mother reappears, Adele's past and the family secrets that Rose reveals shatter her carefully constructed world... A little predictable and I did put it aside to read something else a couple of times, but enjoyed the story. I did not enjoy the ending however. With a title like 'Secrets' and knowing the damage they can do, why would the main protagonist choose not tell the truth to Michael, but to create another secret that might one day be inadvertently revealed and cause more heartache and pain - didn't make sense :( An insight into English life, especially in and around London during World War Two, and the sadness, suffering and despair forced on hundreds of thousands of citizens prior to the war, then during the Blitz and bombings. Intrigue in the dynamics of two families and how they overcame their difficulties and their differences. The author paints a vivid picture of the area in and around Rye, and having travelled through that part of England made the read all the more enjoyable.
"Adele Talbot is twelve when her younger sister is killed in a road accident, and her mother Rose - so devastated and demented by the loss - begins to abuse her." "Rose is sent off to an asylum and when her father, too, relinquishes any responsibility for her, Adele is sent to a children's home, but finds the treatment there even worse. She is soon forced to run away and walks through the night to Rye to trace her grandmother, Honour, a bitter, eccentric woman who is not best pleased to see her granddaughter." "Eventually, the two forge a bond and Honour allows Adele to stay and enjoy the peace, serenity and safety of her new home. And when Adele meets Paul Bailey two years later and real love and friendship enter her life, she feels she can at last start to put her hurtful past behind her." "But then war breaks out and with Adele working all hours as a nurse and Michael risking his life in the RAF, they endure separation, danger and terrible upheaval. And then Rose decides to rear her ugly head again - with more than a few family secrets up her sleeve."--BOOK JACKET. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
