A Quaker spiritual classic by Thomas Kelly. How can we be sure that God is real, and not just a creation of our wishes? We have disquieting desires for a God, for a real God. There come to us times of loneliness when we seem to have a premonition of a deep vastness in ourselves, when the universe about us, gigantic as it is in all its starry depths, seems cramped and narrow for our souls, and something makes us long for an abiding Home. We have times of fatigue, of confusion, of exhaustion, of utter discouragement, when we long for a serene and everlasting Bosom on which to lay our heads and be at peace. But how can we be sure that what we call God is not a product of our wishful thinking, a self-delusion we create, a giant shadow of our longings flung up against the sky and asserted to be real?… (plus d'informations)

Kelly delivered this essay while leading a Pendle Hill conference on cultivating the spiritual life, just five days before his death. This is Kelly at the height of his gifts, sharing deep truth in the accessible way that has made him a favorite of generations of readers. ( )

Experience a hypothetical God as if he exists, proposed Kelly in this series of four lessons: access to spiritual reality through the Holy Spirit in prayer, fellowship, God, and the spiritual world.

Reading and rereading Thomas Kelly, a mystic and one of the Quaker Greats of the 20th century, is essential. Here are four short inspiring addresses he gave shortly before his death, on the reality of God and the spiritual world, prayer, and fellowship. Kelly's writing is scholarly, sweet, and authentically experiential all at the same time. He's the one who prescribes, in such a calm joyful matter-of-fact way, that we learn, by practicing, to live on two levels at once, paying the necessary attention to the world and simultaneously deep inside, offering oneself to God. It takes some years to get it going naturally, but keep at it, he advises cheerfully. Right. Kelly is very special. ( )
