Are we ready for the opportunities and challenges facing the aging church? Now is the time for the church to offer ministry to its increasing numbers of seniors and to benefit from ministry they can offer. In this book James M. Houston and Michael Parker issue an urgent call to reconceive the place and part of the elderly and seniors in the local church congregation.Confronting the idea that the aging are mostly a burden on the church, they boldly address the moral issues related to caring for them, provide examples of successful care-giving programs and challenge the church to restore broken connections across the generations.Cowritten by a noted theologian and an expert in the fields of social work and gerontology, this interdisciplinary book assesses our current cultural context and the challenges and opportunities we face. A tidal wave is coming. The baby boomers have already started reaching the age of retirement and as they age, they will change everything. Is the church ready? And how can elders benefit the church? How does the church support and encourage not only elders but caregivers? This is an outstanding, passionate book. It repeats itself a little and goes off track once in awhile, but overall, is very good. I would encourage any young person to look at some type of gerontology as they prepare to work in the world that is coming. ( )

Those weaknesses are minor compared with the massive amount of useful information about the serious nature of an issue that few churches
address and few ministers prepare for. This book challenges pastors, lay leaders, and congregations to embrace healthy attitudes and actions toward aging adults, for the sake of themselves, for the future of the church,
and for the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.

[Preface] As far back as I (Dr. Parker) can remember, older people have played a crucial and unique role in my life.
[Prologue: Distressed Communities] In the book of Nehemiah, Jerusalem was initially pictured as a vulnerable community, not unlike those without a social support system today.
Major catastrophes like 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the 2008 Haitian earthquake can serve as a wakeup call to individuals, families, communities and nations about the necessity of being prepared.
[Epilogue] As missionaries in Spain, living very simply in faith for our material as well as spiritual needs, my (Dr. Houston's) parents were profoundly influenced by the Spanish people with thom we lived.
