Dated (now over 45 years old) but has a separate Canadian Atlas. This volume should be used only in association with more recent atlases with more current data. ( )

This is a workable atlas for it's time. It is clearly American-centered in it's approach; it makes little pretense to being anything else. Nevertheless, it is utilitarian and functional, affordable and unencumbered with extraneous information.

This atlas was my first atlas as a kid. I think I got it in jr high and I was taken by it, absolutely captivated by the maps. The extraneous info was nice, but it was the maps that I poured over. I think atlases become more interesting with time; indeed they are little time capsules and now, forty years later, this atlas offers a vision of how the world has changed since then. The British and French colonial empires were just ravelling then. The Soviet Union and the Iron curtain were firmly ensconced and the disasters of Viet Nam lay in the future. ( )
