Forged in heaven, it is called Kusanagi, the Grasscutter-the lost sword of the Gods. This legendary blade could potentially tip the scales of power for the shadowy Conspiracy of Eight in their quest to overthrow the Shogunate and reinstate the Emperor. With the help of a witch and the souls of dead warriors, they plan to recover the lost sword and bring the Shogun down. But when the fates place the Grasscutter in the hands of masterless samurai Usagi Yojimbo, the ronin rabbit becomes the focus of a deadly struggle for possession of the dread blade. And this crisis pales beside the dark possibilities should the sword come to the demonic warrior, Jei! Grasscutter collects Stan Sakai's longest and most ambitious Usagi tale to date: a sweeping epic showcasing one of comics' most individual artistic voices at the peak of his creative skills.… (plus d'informations)

I just finished a marathon Usagi read over the past few days. I picked up this collection and "Seasons" (#11) recently and went on a binge reading from the beginning. Collection #4, "The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy" had been my favorite. No longer!

"Grasscutter" is amazing. Sakai weaves in Japanese history in it and as a bonus, at the end of the collection he talks about what he used and tweaked from history when writing this story and then provides an extensive bibliography for anyone who is interested.

Sakai takes characters and story elements written earlier and blends them effortlessly. Extremely entertaining and it's easy to see why in 1999 he was awarded an Eisner for"Best Serialized Story". ( )

Masterful. Nearly all the recurring characters come together in this epic story about a legendary sword. ( )

I originally got it more as a souvenir from the Japanese-American museum in Los Angeles than as serious book purchase, but I was pleasantly surprised. The book tells a very interesting story combining Japanese history and mythology with modern elements, and I enjoyed reading it very much. The artwork is not anything spectacular, but it serves its purpose (keep in mind, the cover art is the only coloured part, the actual book is black and white).

The only problem I had with it is that I didn't feel the amount of content justified the price tag. So I don't think I'll be getting any more of the series, but I am happy to have read this one. ( )

Quite possibly my favorite Usagi Yojimbo album, Grasscutter beautifully interweaves traditional (and well-sourced) japanese history/folklore with the life of Usagi and company. Stands along very well on its on and as an introduction to the series as well. ( )
