The daughter of Polish immigrants growing up in the 1830s on the Missouri frontier, Nadya knew she was not like other girls. But when she became a woman and the Change came, she discovered just how different she was. For Nadya was a shape changer, a werewolf like her Polish immigrant mother and father before her. After coming through a great personal tragedy brought about by her trusting nature and burgeoning sexuality, Nadya heads west to California, seeking a place to be wild and free. Nadya befriends the more cultured Elizabeth and the prepubescent Jenny, and together, the three young women fight their way across the vast American frontier. En route, they encounter rattlesnakes, Indians, the remains of the cannibalistic Donner party, and Elizabeth's repressed sexuality, which leads to an affair between her and Nadya.… (plus d'informations)

I went looking for non-disappointing werewolf novels because I couldn't remember many. I don't remember much about this---I should reread it.

Nadya is a fantasy historical adventure with romance throughout. As a werewolf story I thought it was rather enjoyable, very different from the few others that I have read. It is set in the 1830's and follows the protagonist as they move along the Oregon trail. Just like the trail itself it is not fast paced and really focuses on the character trials and relationships. I would say that the writing was well done and the characters fit well within the setting but there was often demeaning descriptions of Native Americans when following a handful of characters. Aside from those characters, I don't have the proper knowledge to comment on the way the author chose to depict Native Americans or their cultures. In my opinion it is definitely a worthwhile read for those who enjoy werewolf novels. ( )

This was a book that had such great potential and could have been expounded upon greatly. Some parts were long and drawn out and others left you wanting for more to fill in the characters. ( )

It was Ok - an unusual take on the werewolf story but a bit repetative. Tiptree shortlist 1996 ( )
