There are unexplained touches of magic rings, swords, crystals, a winged horse, and an ubiquitous black mastiff. The plot is pedestrian and predictable.
The setting presumes to be a sort of 15th Century kingdom with enumerable details that challenge everything I know about that historical period’s culture, mores, and hierarchy.
Characters are pretty one dimensional: a mercurial antagonist who forgets to use his magic crystal porthole to spot the whereabouts of his enemies; a longsuffering protagonist who magically pumps up his physique but can’t escape his condition; and a heroine who is an uneducated peasant with 21st Century feminist attitude and a college vocabulary.
The syntax is fine, although the dialogues are a bit stilted. I had to force myself to finish this first novel. Maybe Chesley’s next production will be more believable. ( )
