The author's life story, growing up the son of Palestinians who were evicted from the home villages when Israel gained its independence, and then he and his family were evicted from their home in East Jerusalem after the 1967 war. He ends up going to prison for ten years, after a bomb his friend was assembling goes off in his home. He gets his education in prison, where the Palestinians had an orderly society, with schooling and elections for internal authority. Then, after his release he eventually ends up working for Seeds for Peace, the organization that ran a summer camp in Maine where Jewish and Muslim kids would try to get to know, learn from and understand each other. But when it exploded prematurely, killing one of his friends, al Jundi was caught and sentenced to ten years in prison. It was in an Israeli jail that his unlikely transformation began. Al Jundi was welcomed into a highly organized, democratic community of political prisoners who required that members of their cell read, engage in political discourse on topics ranging from global revolutions to the precepts of nonviolent protest and revolution. Al Jundi left prison still determined to fight for his peopleâ??s rightsâ??but with a very different notion of how to undertake that struggle.
