Thanks to DNA research, the Basques of the Pyrenees Mountains are no longer the "mystery people." Thirty-five thousand years ago, they traveled from Central Asia to Western Europe, where they still live, speaking a language unlike any other. After helping Columbus discover America, Basques spread out from the Pampas to California and beyond into the Sierra and Reno, Nevada. For a century, they were the sheepherders of the West and documented their lives in a prehistoric manner on trees. Now settled in towns, they celebrate their heritage every year with colorful costumes, dancing, weight lifting, wood chopping, and hearty food that endures in their popular restaurants.… (plus d'informations)

Wonderful! I'm generally, actually, not much interested in history, but I feel obligated to know a little something about everything, and this is such a fun way to learn! The author is, of course, Basque, and what little text there is does, of course, laud their culture. But it does so in a plausible and poetic way. And the pictures - gosh! Since 'a picture is worth a thousand words' one really does learn a lot from these and from their captions.

It does probably help that I live here, already knew about the sheepherders and the arborglyphs, and have enjoyed the family-style dinners at Basque restaurants. But I think anyone interested in Basque or eastern Cal/ western NV history would benefit from this. One thing I learned is that this history is really young. The sheepherders were (still) being recruited from their homelands in the 1940s and 50s, and carving the arborglyphs as late as the 1960s!

Arcadia Pub. Images of America should have a subscription service like Time-Life or QPB. I could easily see myself getting my first four books free and then buying another every month for a long time. Even though I don't buy new books, but get them from the library.
