The average trumpet students, over the course of their middle and high
school career, will only receive instruction and perform on a B-flat trumpet. This
presents the problem that when they enter college and study advanced literature, or
perform in the professional realm, they lack the experience with the other trumpets
on which a professional trumpeter performs.
The main goal of this paper is to explore the minds of collegiate level trumpet
instructors and find out their answers to the following questions:
1) When and why should a student start on another trumpet?
2) What is a logical progression of which trumpets to study?
3) What is a good practice regime for each instrument, and what is
appropriate repertoire for study on each instrument?
4) What are some pedagogical tips for teaching the idiosyncrasies of each
trumpet?
Eight college level trumpet teachers from different regions of the United
States were asked the above questions through interviews. Complete transcripts of
the interviews are included in Appendix A.
