- Renilde Hammacher-van den Brande was born in Edegem, Belgium, and became a well-known art historian and curator. She was married to the Dutch art historian Bram Hammacher.
Renilde was best known as the chief curator of modern and contemporary art at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, a position she held from 1962 to 1978. During her tenure, she laid the foundation for one of the most important museum collections of modern art in the Netherlands by purchasing works from Mark Rothko, Man Ray, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and others. She also organized major exhibitions, such as those for Salvador Dalí and David Hockney. Among other works, she was coordinator of the exhibition and the catalog Symbolism in Europe in 1975-1976.
