I found the letters themselves very compelling, but the author was frustratingly protective of her subject--by turns defensive and reticient, neither of which are great traits for a biographer. Also, I would have appreciated more in the way of responses to her letters, where possible, though I realize that would significantly increase the scope and difficulty of the project.

Betty Toole gathered this selection of letters that Ada Lovelace wrote to friends and relatives. This includes some of Lovelace's correspondence with Charles Babbage, and with contemporary mathematicians of note. The book gives you a sense of how an intelligent woman of the upper classes was able to pursue her interests in science and mathematics through a social circle of intellectual peers. At the same time, she was neither allowed to use the scientific libraries of the day, nor to publish. There is great controversy over whether Ada actually invented the concept of the algorithm; a letter in here allows you to decide for yourself.… (plus d'informations)
