Topographer glacialist Francois E. Matthes was born on March 16, 1874 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He was educated in Europe and, later, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Matthes worked with the U. S. Geological Survey from 1896 to 1913, and was assigned to map the San Andreas Fault. The afficher plus areas he mapped included the Bighorn Mountains and Glacier National Park in Wyoming and Montana, the Grand Canyon in Arizona, Yosemite Valley in California, and Mount Rainer in Washington. As a glacialist, Mattes took part in a worldwide study of climatic fluctuations. Mattes died on June 21, 1948 in Berkeley, California. (Bowker Author Biography) afficher moins
