Courte biographie
R.F. (Ronald Frederick) Delderfield was born in South London. The family moved to Devon when he was a child and he attended the West Buckland School. After leaving school, he became a junior reporter for his father's newspaper, the Exmouth Chronicle, and eventually rose to become its editor. He then began to write stage plays and became a highly successful novelist, renowned for his portrayals of slices of English life. His multi-novel sagas, including A Horseman Riding By (1966–1968), a trilogy consisting of Long Summer's Day, Post of Honour and The Green Gauntlet, made him one of Britain's most popular authors, and his books are still widely read. Many of his works were adapted for British television. His autobiography, For My Own Amusement, was published in 1972.

Critiques

I first read this book in dutch from the library some fifty years ago. Then I purchased the Coronet pocket edition and have (re-)read it about every decade. Today it shows it age. It is not PC anymore. The book not only starts with Mr. Sermon hitting a boy in his class and going on hitting him (p. 16). The boys father congratulates Sermon - by way of the Headmaster !. "No he wasn't angry , all he wanted to do was shake your hand and tell you to repeat the dose once a week. (p. 282)". The novel is also somewhat misogynistic, such as when Sebastian "finding it difficult to maintain his grip and in any case the briefs were totally inadequate protection as her yell testified the moment his hand descended (p. 303)."
For me however it remains a light and amusing, heart warming story of how Mr. Sermon finds hidden talents in himself that he never really suspected. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a feel-good read and can place the non-PC passages in their correct time context.
