Pages 56 and 57 in particular show the close connections between LangdOc, the south of what is now France, and Italy, both linguistically and especially culturally. It took The French (i.e. the Normans from the north of What is now France, whom the southerners called Francais) nearly a century to subdue and connect the regions to the kindgom of France. Wiping out the Cathars to do so (which apparently started and continued in Bulgaria, under the Byzantine empire in the 10th century...).

Excellent maps at the end of the book.
