Nice follow up. Janet’s Beneath powers are manifesting and the conflict between her two powers may tear her apart. The dragon council wants to kill Mick for his disobedience. And there is an undead walking around killing people while he tries to protect her. Her life couldn’t get much more complicated……. ( )

This series continues to get better! In the first book, Janet had to fight with her hell-goddess mother to get control over her life and powers; in this one, Mick is the one in danger. The dragons are after him for not fulfilling his duties, so now he has to stand trial, while Janet’s Beneath magic is growing stronger and causing all kinds of havoc — the very Beneath magic that makes her a target for dragons and gods alike.

I enjoy that we see Mick more vulnerable in this book. In the first one, he seemed super strong and kick-ass, like nothing could touch him, while Janet kept getting hurt and needed to rely on him to keep her safe. In this one, however, it starts off with Janet doing the rescuing and trying to figure out how to use her new magic without hurting her friends. It’s nice to see more of a balance in this book, and it really took it to the next level. Whereas I thought the first one was fairly decent, this book is straight-up good and enjoyable (and FILLED with action!).

We also get to know more about characters that were introduced in the first book; Maya and Janet’s friendship continues to grow and develop. I very much liked their girl-night escapade when Maya got tired of Nash being a jerk. There are also a couple new ones to meet which is very cool; Janet hired Cassandra, a witch, to be the manager of her now-open hotel. I can’t wait to see her character get fleshed out in future books. And we get to learn more about the dragons!!! This was by far my favorite part. A couple of dragon characters come into the scene when Mick has been summoned to a trial by the dragon council. I really like Colby for being more of a rogue dragon with his own interests at heart; his foil is Drake, a council lackey who is very much a stickler for the rules. I hope they come back in future books!

Basically, this is a series I’m very much beginning to love and I can’t wait to read the third one. If these books continue to improve like this, I’m going to have to upgrade this series to a must-read for all urban fantasy lovers. (Though it’s pretty darn good where it stands right now.)

An action packed magical quest that had me on the edge of my seat. This second book in the series was much better paced with a natural flow to the stories. I like the fact that the author leaves you wanting to read the next book but crazy to read it because of a hard core cliffhanger.
Mick and Janet get into a life or death struggle more than once and death is winning. Coyote, he is one sneaky god. He is never easy, never understandable, never predictable, but yet very lovable as a character. Janet struggles to see her hotel open and run efficiently. Janet has to deal with mundane troubles, contractors not showing, emotional disruptions and outbursts and magical entities trying to kill her. She also has to deal with who she is and what her place in the world will be. Will her powers, destroy ? The dragons and other powerful gods think so, she must die. She discovers much about herself the dragons and finds she has friends. ( )

225 pages in and despite action and promise of amazing ending, putting aside for now. Awfully jumbled with bunch of vignettes and new supernaturals just not working for me. One too many greasy charmers (plus unrelenting mirror) and comments like sugar, honey, honeybunch...

4 ½ Stars.
Firewalker is the second book of the series Stormwalker by Allyson James.
This books starts couple of months after the end of book one (Stormwalker) with Mick been trapped inside a mountain by the dragons for breaking the dragon law when he didn’t kill Janet. Janet rescue him with the (force by blackmail) help of Nash Jones.
Little after their return to her hotel a body is found, super pain in the ass Sheriff Jones starts his investigation and of course Mick and Janet are the primary suspects.
Janet is trying to find out who was the killer, while dealing with all the stress of the Dragon “court date” that will decide Mick’s fate. Also her Beneath magic that was latent in the previous book is awaken after her visit to mommy’s land (Beneath); this is a dark magic that is trying to control her, she needs to learn how to deal with it and with her Stormwalker magic inherited from her father.

In this book we see previous characters as Maya, Coyote, Nash, and of course the devilish mirror and new ones as Cassandra a witch with a past that Janet hired as the hotel manager, Pamela a shapeshifer and Cassandra’s love interest and other dragons.

Janet is stronger and is not waiting for anybody to rescue her. She is growing up magically and emotionally. Mick, oh my God Mick (Can I have him?), he’s a kick-ass dragon when he needs to be and the loveliest man when he’s with Janet... Oh my! The things he said to her, the way he talks to her...Wow!
The mirror had me cracking up, “it” is a great supporting character. I love its wittiness.

My favorite quotes:

* My magical cherry had been broken at age eleven (Janet)

* Nash stare at me. “That thing was your mother?”
“We are not responsible for our parents” I tried to joke. (Janet)

* “Shit, Mick. I don’t want this. I don’t want any of this. Why can’t we just have a normal relationship?” (Janet)

* “You really don’t know what he was?” (Janet)
“No, hot pants. Sorry” (Mirror)
“Well, if you remember anything else, let me know.”
“Sure thing. Tell you what, give me a little tongue, and I’ll see what I can think of.”
The thing never stopped “You’re a mirror.” I reminded it. “You don’t have body parts.”
“Hey, honey. I can dream.”

* “Because I love you. And because I want to feast on you whenever I see you.” (Mick)

* I put my hand over the glass. “What is it with your obsession with sex?” (Janet)
“I’m a mirror. I can only be a voyeur, so I have to go for it.”

In general I really like the book, it was a page turner for me and can’t wait to read book 3 of the series “Shadow Walker.”

I strongly recommend you read Stormwalker before getting into Firewalker. You won’t regret it. ( )
