The House The History of the House of Representatives, by Robert V. Remini (read 9 Jan 2022) This book, published in 2006,tellsthe story of the House from 1789 to 2005. Much of what it tells is well-known but surprisingly I found parts telling what I did not know, even near the end of the 20th century. In my youth (from 1941 till 1950) I read the Congressional Record quite closely the account for that time was familiar territory, but i was surprised how much I was unfamiliar with in the closing years of the 20th century. The author often makes judgments as to the doings of the House and of individual House members and such were always of interest even when I thought he maybe was wrong. All in all, the book was attention holding and I looked forward to reading in it with anticipation. Nowadays seldom are there many members in attendance when the House is in session, since the floor activity can be followed on television. And the House ordinarily only works meaningfully from Tuesday to Thursday, and many House members do not know other members unless they are on committee with them. The book did not inspire good feelings about how the House operates these days. ( ) aucune critique | ajouter une critique

In this incomparable single-volume history, distinguished historian Robert V. Remini traces the institution from a struggling, nascent body to the venerable powerhouse it has become since America's rise on the world stage. The essential drama of democracy—the struggle between principle and pragmatism—is showcased throughout the book, and through it the history of America's successful experiment with democracy unfurls.
