The mystery wasn't very mysterious and the end was a bit of a cop out and there weren't any clues dropped that I could see to help the reader figure it out. Some of the police stuff wasn't real realistic. The story of Berry and the man stalking her was interrupted quite often by flashbacks of her parents affair 30 years ago. At first the flashbacks were a little disruptive and then you realized that the real story was happening in the flashbacks and because they had been apart for 30 years you knew a train wreck was coming and it was a bit agonizing waiting for it. I loved the character of Dodge and would have been happy if more of the story had revolved around him. Eventually I got a little emotional over his mistakes and his sad life and was happy that he eventually got a second chance. Caroline, the woman he loved was also not entirely without blame either. I've read some reviews that said they didn't like the manipulative ways that Berry got herself in trouble. But as I've said before, I don't expect all my characters to be perfect people. I like them better if they're not. I will say however that had there been more from Berry's POV about her learning and growing and realizing she'd taken a wrong path, it would have been easier to make her a more sympathetic character. It wasn't that she didn't grow just that there wasn't room enough to really show it rather than tell it. Not a regular romance and not a real good mystery but it does succeed on the level of showing mistakes can affect a person's whole life. Good story about an obsessed deranged man that is trying to kill Dodge's daughter, whom he hasn't seen since she was born. Dodge makes the trip to Texas to help Berry and the love of his life, Caroline. The actual story is good and sometimes riveting when you don't get bogged down in the sex parts between Carolina and Dodge, and of course Berry falls for someone similar to her own father. Not my most fave book, but a solid good read. The middle was a little dragging, but I loved the "twist" at the end, even though I saw it coming. My favorite character wads Dodge, who seems to be everyone else's as well. I don't remember him from Smash Cut, but it's been a while.. but I love characters like this. I am glad the female of the story wasn't as lily white, pure-to-the-soul kind of person, and had a few large flaws, but her man loved her anyway. But does everyone have to pair up at the end, in every book? Is there always a happy ending in her stories? It's not in real-life. I received this book for free from the Goodreads first reads program. This book was good. I liked all the main characters. Dodge, Caroline, Ski and Berry. The story cut back and forth between present day (the threat against Berry's life), and the past (the story of how Dodge and Caroline met). Sometimes it felt like I was reading two separate books. I could have done without such an extensive explanation of Dodge and Caroline's past. It could have been summed up in less than a chapter. The mystery/suspense aspect of this book moved a little too slowly for me. You knew right away who the bad guy was, but the hunt for him went on and on. I have only read a few of Sandra Brown's books. But I have enjoyed them enough that I will read more of them if the opportunity presents itself. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Late one night Atlanta PI Dodge Hanley receives a phone call from his lost love, Houston realtor Caroline King, who asks him to come to Texas to help catch Oren Starks, a creepy over-the-top stalker who's out to kill Dodge and Caroline's 30-year-old daughter, Berry Malone. Dodge hasn't seen Berry since the day she was born. When Starks takes a shot at Berry in Caroline's house, hitting a work associate of Berry's instead, Dodge rushes to the rescue. While Merritt County deputy sheriff Ski Nyland, who falls for the equally smitten Berry, is no slouch on the case, the relentlessly ruthless Dodge plays the most crucial role in the effort to stop the bad guy. This is the first book I've read by Sandra Brown. I like the way she wrote the book. It was told in "current" time and then in the past by retelling the story of Dodge and Berry's mother and what led up to them not speaking to or seeing each other for 30 years. It was very well written and there was a nice little twist at the end. ( )
