This is a delightful book about a British couple moving to Spain. It is professionally written, but not written by a professional, the difference being that it was believable and very entertaining. most everyone who has lived in a Northern location dreams of moving somewhere warm and sunny and this book details how it is a complicated, and confusing but ultimately rewarding decision.[return]I will definitely be reading the follow-up. I rocketed through the first four books of the "Two old fools" series. Funny, self-deprecating "old fools" and eccentric characters you'd expect to find in a tiny mountain European village. My absolute favourite chapter of this first book is the Equators - laugh out loud in my case. ( )

This memoir reminded me a bit of the James Herriott books which I adore. His books are more charming, but this was good. Maybe 3.5--good enough that I look forward to reading the next in the series. ( )

Anything in print with the power to make me laugh out loud is a score. I've never moved and I'm not fond of travel, but we are getting to the point in our lives where we are starting to plan to pull up stakes and move to the place we want to retire in. It certainly won't be as dramatic as this couple's adventure, but I am hoping to somehow ease the transition. The story is engaging, the writing flows nicely, and as a lovely bonus, each chapter begins with what certainly appears to be an authentic recipe. I will read the other entries in her series. ( )

This is a very enjoyable book. The stories are interesting and either amusing or outright funny. Every story had me either smiling or laughing out loud. ( )

‘laugh-out-loud funny...especially the Spanish women heckling over eggs from “The English”...hilarious...engaging...the interspersion of recipes is charming’

This has to to be THE book for anyone with an interest in moving to Spain or trying to make out what life is like here.

A very well written and extremely funny book by Victoria Twead, who is an Eye on Spain member and often hangs out around the forums.

This is Victoria's tale of hers and Joe's move from Southern England to Southern Spain, full of fun and frolics and with a wonderful array of characters that amuse the reader from start to finish.

Highly recommended and perfect for getting any "scrooge" laughing at Christmas.

“Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools” is an hilarious rib-splitting read from beginning to end. We are introduced to village characters, both animal and human, ache for the trials endured by poor Joe, and find ourselves laughing on every page wishing the end wouldn’t come quite so soon.

To the villagers of El Hoyo, young and old, whose warm welcome, patience and generosity was astonishing.
I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.

And to Juliet and Sue, the Gin Twins.
May their bottle never run dry.

“No, I didn’t. Honestly. I promise I didn’t get any more chickens.” But Joe’s eyes refused to meet mine.
And then the box crowed.
