At their best, these booklets leave you feeling like you've received a concise examination of the topic, spiced up with excellent descriptive art. This number is near the positive end of the spectrum as, even though I'm not a total novice when it comes to the Thirty Years' War, I learned some details that I'd not been previously aware of. Looking at the section for further reading, it's fine so far as it goes, but it doesn't mention the works of Peter H. Wilson (who seems to have become the best current writer on the topic), or David Parrott's "The Business of War," which is an advanced study of the military entrepreneurs of the period. ( )
