A sequel toThe More the Merrier, this is a hilarious tale of a holiday week on a remote British island -- where the highlight of the week is the annual fair with its Eating Things on Sticks competition. Harry is in trouble. He's burned down the family kitchen so now has to spend a week of his summer holidays with his uncle Tristram -- who's heading off to stay with a new girlfriend, Morning Glory, on a tiny British island. Harry doesn't expect it to be a lot of fun -- with just a wacky competition at the end of the week to look forward to. He certainly didn't expect to discover all the beards. Or the angel on the mountain. Or the helicopters circling overhead all week. And he definitely didn't think it would be so wet.… (plus d'informations)

This had some genuinely hilarious moments, but was largely silly. But then I'm not a teenage boy - which I suspect would be the target market for this short book. At the start of the book Harry is being shunted off by his mother to a relative as they need the boys out of the way while they have the kitchen redone after Harry managed to set fire to it. He has rejected several aunts and uncles, then has the idea of asking his bachelor uncle Tristan to take him away for a week. And so Harry & Tristan end up on some benighted island visiting Tristan's latest girlfriend, Morning Glory. By the time the week is up, they've managed to damage the house, suffered a lot of rain, been up a mountain, seen and angel, seen the island's "best beard" competition at the island fair and entered the competition to eat things on sticks, which might not be the wisest thing to do before boarding the ferry back to the mainland. They've also, entirely by accident, triggered a manhunt for a missing child...
It is, at times, very silly. It is also quite amusing. The beard theme features quite heavily and the author has a lot of fun with the beard descriptions. Morning Glory turns out to be both good hearted and not quite a silly as she first appears. It all gets tied up into a nice neat bow, but then that's what's supposed to happen in books when you're a chld, it is all supposed to end well.
The cover image looks just like a FAB lolly, which takes me back... ( )
