The Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary is the first historical thesaurus to be compiled for any of the world's languages, and includes almost the entire vocabulary of English from Old English to the present day, as recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary and specialist dictionaries of Old English. Conceived and compiled by the English Language Department of the University of Glasgow, the Historical Thesaurus of the OxfordEnglish Dictionary is a groundbreaking analysis of the historical inventory of English. The thesaurus organization follows a thematic system of classification, with entries arranged in a semantichierarchy according to their meanings rather than listed alphabetically. This means that, for example, all the verbs meaning 'to eat', and other words connected with eating, can be viewed together. The Historical Thesaurus also has a unique historical component, and is linked directly to the senses and the dating of words in the OED. For each individual entry synonyms are presented in chronological order according to the first recorded date of the word's use in English, with earliestsynonyms first. The Historical Thesaurus thereby lists obsolete words, and obsolete meanings of current words as well as offering a comprehensive treatment of current English. TheHistorical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary is a unique resource for scholars of all types - linguists and language specialists, historians, literary commentators, etc. - as well as being a fascinating resource for everyone with an interest in the English language and its historical development. It is a perfect complement to the OED itself, allowing the words in the OED to be cross-referenced and viewed in wholly new ways. The text is made up of two main parts: the main text, comprising numbered sections for semantic categories, and the index, comprising a full A-Z look up of nearly one million lexical items. There is also an introductory essay and a free fold-out chart showing thetop levels of the classification structure.… (plus d'informations)

Certainly built for thoroughness (and thorough it is) rather than convenience. One should point out that the first (shorter) volume is the thesaurus proper- while the second volume is an Index. The thesaurus is ordered thematically, designated by a simple decimal system containing 3 main section levels (01-the world, 02-the mind, 03-the social world) and then further articulated categories and subcategories. So for instance, we have under the section Mind (02) the category Mental Capacity (02.01) further divided into such subcategories as Consciousness (02.01.03) and Contempt (02.01.18). Consciousness further divided into subcategories such as Unconscious (02.01.03.01), Subconscious (02.01.03.03) and Subjectivity, relation to self (02.01.03.06). Under each specific entry (with separated entries by parts of speech), one finds a list of words chronologically ordered.

The Index is ordered alphabetically and would be the most likely place to begin. Therefore, in most instances, one would have each volume open alongside a volume of the OED (since the thesaurus offers no explanative text other than historical dates, part of speech etc.) - making browsing rather cumbersome. So, five stars from the officechair academic in me, three stars from the armchair lover of words- four stars keeps the peace. ( )

With a little effort, a historical thesaurus can even serve as a vehicle for a kind of linguistic time travel. “For any given period in the past,” the editors write, “the user should be able to ascertain the exact state of the vocabulary (i.e., the ‘lexical system’) which existed at that time.”

The word "thesaurus" itself is pillaged from the Greek for "treasury", and this monumental new example from Oxford, 45 years in the making and containing 800,000 meanings, constitutes an epic justification of the original sense.

We use a dictionary to look up a word; we will use the HTOED to look up a sense or a number of senses. It has no real precedent, and although it does at first seem daunting, with perseverance and concentration it becomes approachable; then you can see that soon it will provide support and entertainment, and soon after that it will have become an addictive companion, the two volumes stoutly flanking Shakespeare and the Bible on that shimmering desert island.

It contains almost the entire vocabulary of English, from Old English to the present day, giving a unique insight into the development of the language.
