A beautiful ending to a true masterpiece. ( )

This series of eight graphic novels tells the story of Buddha's life through the stories of surrounding characters based both on actual historical figures and fictional ones. Told in the Japanese manga style it has a specific style and humour, and the themes are very mature including violence and nudity.

Finally! I have reached the end of the epic saga that is Tezuka's Buddha. This last installment was in places so difficult to read that it made me briefly think fondly of the Old Testament slash-and-burn leave-no-woman-or-child-alive style of warfare. The never-ending cycles of revenge are beyond heartbreaking. How can anyone speak of peace or compassion in such a world?

But somehow, Buddha did. And the fact that he could stay true to his message, in the face of all he saw, all he suffered, makes it all the more inspiring.

This series as a whole is a must read for fans of graphic novels and compassion everywhere. ( )

Wat een verhaal, wat een tekeningen, wat een serie. Met het omslaan van de laatste bladzijde had ik het gevoel een waar epos te hebben afgesloten. Natuurlijk is Boeddha een groots figuur in onze geschiedenis en leent alleen al zijn levensverhaal zich voor het woord epos. Maar ik bedoel nog meer hoe Osamu Tezuka dit verhaal verteld heeft en doorvlochten met zijn eigen kijk op de mensheid, dit een groots werk is geworden.

Inhoudelijk heeft dit laatste deel over de eindfase van Boeddha zijn leven nog interessante wendingen te laten zien. Zo roepen destructieve gebeurtenissen opnieuw twijfel op bij Boeddha, twijfel over of hij al die jaren voor niets zijn verhaal heeft lopen vertellen om dan later tot een nog veel dieper inzicht te komen.
Een aantal personages uit de eerste delen krijgen hierin ook weer een rol. Zo voelt de serie als een mooi afgerond geheel.

Nu ik alle delen heb gelezen, kijk ik al uit naar het herlezen. Met de kennis van het verhaal in mijn achterhoofd kan ik dan nog meer genieten van de vele details in de tekeningen en tussendoor opmerkingen die het de handtekening van Osamu Tezuka meegeeft. ( )

With this, I finish reading Buddha series by Osamu Tezuka.

It was a nice, compassionate story about journey of Buddha. It is not a story that we all know. I say this since that was my perception. Osamu Tezuka has included horde of interesting characters whose lives and destinies are entwined with a meeting with Buddha.

Naradutta, who was mentioned in first book, finally dies after meeting Buddha. Thattha who was kid in the first book also dies fighting Kosalans, he wanted to avenge his friend Chapra and his mother. Story of rabbit sacrificing itself in the first book has more meaning. Neither is Buddha projected as know-it-all. He learns life and nature's riddles one by one, sometimes by chance. He is neither a miracle-worker but he is definitely a healer but that takes time.

Osamu weaves a wonderful story and his illustrations are quick (to absorb), simple and interesting. There is lot of humour about writer/manga/comic characters (not to mention an irrelevant drawing trick) which is rib-tickling. ( )
