It is said that long before the Dark Age king of the Britons called Arthur was ever heard of, his golden reign was prophesied, and after decades of invasion and civil violence had wracked post-Roman Britain, his presaged leadership was a rare promise of future peace. Events leading to that time, some of them full of hope, more often full of sacrifice, inevitably began to fall into place...When the mysterious druid Myrddin Emrys, known in legend as Merlin the Enchanter, is certain the high king is in imminent danger of yet another assassination attempt, he summons iron-willed spy and master of disguise Marcus ap Iorwerth to unearth the conspirators and destroy their plots. Marcus reluctantly agrees to help after his wife Claerwen, driven by her otherworldly gift of visions, insists that she must accompany him on the quest. It is soon discovered that Pascentius, the youngest son of an earlier and well-hated king, is allied with dreaded Saxon mercenaries and readily poised to reclaim his father's throne. But before Marcus and Claerwen can spoil his plans, a second conspiracy of personal revenge closes in on them. Falsely declared fugitives by the very ones they had sought to help, they become trapped in a labyrinthine intrigue between their accusers and the traitors. In a desperate race against time, they must endure hardship and profound personal loss, while pushing Britain towards freedom, peace and the future called Arthur. In the Shadow of Dragons continues the spectacular four-part Macsen's Treasure series, blending Dark Age Celtic history, Arthurian legend and extraordinary original characters into an unstoppable, heart-thumping adventure.… (plus d'informations)

This was the second book in this great Arthurian series. The landscapes and charcters painted by the author, seem like an epic movie in my excellent imagination. I look forward to getting the third book from the Library soon! I recommend this to all lovers of this period and genre. ( )

In the second installment of the Macsen’s Treasure Series, we follow Marcus and Claerwen as they try to foil an assassination attempt on the high king. The action of the story is again fast paced and interesting. One of the plot points was easy to figure out, but there were a few surprises none the less. ( )

The second book of the Macsen's Treasure Series follows the path of Marcus ap Iorwerth and his wife Claerwen in the quest of Britons' kings.
Myrddin Emrys (also and better known as Merlin the Enchanter) is the other main character in this book, because he is the son of the king Ambrosius.
The druid Myrddin feels the danger looming on his father and asks Marcus for help; this time the couple (Marcus and Claerwen) works together.

The title referrs to Marcus' underground job as a spy, working in the shadow of the kings, and the Red Dragon (or Y Ddraig Goch) is the symbol of the people of Britain opposite to the White Dragon, symbol of the Saxons.

Marcus manages every dangerous actions, apart from the last one (maybe the most important one?).
Claerwen, in this second book, is almost in the background, more woman and mother than warrior.
Myrddin acts as Virgil with Dante: carrying a candlelight (or the fire in the head), and showing to Marcus the Hell's path toward the peaceful future with King Arthur.

A question: Where did Padrig's wisdom ended up in this book? (He's my favorite character). ( )

This is the second book in a series based on the King Arthur legends. It takes place in the days before King Arthur, and the main characters are a spy and his wife. They are enlisted by Merlin to foil a plot to have the high king assassinated, but it ends up going wrong.

I enjoyed this book a little more than the first one as it seems more closely tied in with the King Arthur legends. The romance between the two main characters felt more natural, and the plot flowed more evenly. I was annoyed at times with particular phrasings the author used, and one of the major plot twists was so obvious I'm pretty sure I yelled, "come on!" at the book, but there was still enough going on to keep me surprised until the end. In the Shadow of Dragons, by Kathleen Cunningham Guler is the second book in the Macsen's Treasure series. It is a tale of fifth century Britain, concerning the returning hero and heroine, Marcus ap Iowerth, and his wife Claerwen. Like the first book in the series, the plot revolves around the adventures of this couple, as Claerwen joins Marcus in his role as a political spy, caught up in the machinations of dark age British politics. Enlisted by Myrddin to stop an assassination plot against the high king Uther Pendragon, Marcus and Claerwen traipse about the country in search of Macsen's spearhead, one of the lost articles of Macsen's Treasure that the enemy, Pascentius, will use to validate his unjust claim to the throne.

A weakness of the series (so far) is that Marcus comes off, at times, as a bit too super-human. He sometimes feels like a fifth century caricature of James Bond. It was hard to imagine that all his enemies could be so feckless that, time and again, he could rescue himself from almost any conceivable situation. However, this minor issue does not detract from one's enjoyment of the story.

Having gotten the somewhat awkward and relatively baseless grand romance between Marcus and Claerwen out of the way in the first book, the author seems to have settled in to bringing out a more traditional Arthurian-flavoured adventure and tale of intrigue. Additionally, the character development is richer and more multi-dimensional than in the previous volume. Ultimately, this makes for a much better plot than was found in the first book, and the second novel in the series is a much better book than the first.

Warmly recommended. ( )
