Now, with the advent of digital tools like Photoshop and Painter, manga artists have discovered new ways of bringing their artwork to life and onto the computer -- with astounding results! This complete guide presents a wealth of information by exploring the digital possibilities of creating manga-style artwork. It details the entire process, from initial rough sketches, to the finished color image, with in-depth instructions and illustrations that demonstrate the intricacies of each technique. It also explains how custom backgrounds, special effects, and the use of filters can add the finishing touches that exemplify professional results.… (plus d'informations)

Much better than I expected - while much of the book is photoshop or illustrator-specific commands that are already far out of date, there's some good stuff here about the principles and techniques of digital art (as applied to cartooning) that are independent of the programs themselves. I was particularly helped by the advice on efficient use of layers and paths and on background creation. But the focus is particularly on digital finishing techniques - particularly the possibilities of computer inking and coloring - so don't look for how-to-draw lessons. And the example art is good enough to let me trust the authors, without being so good as to intimidate (the authors won the Tokyopop Rising Stars of manga contest for new American manga artists.) ( )
