Great start to the Texas Ranger Caitlin Strong series. Fast paced, a lot of action, intrigue and menace, with a well-developed compelling cast of characters. Deals with some very serious issues. I don’t know how it took me so long to start this series but I will be catching up quickly. Very enjoyable read that I highly recommend. ( )

I got about half way through this book and am now setting it aside. It's not a bad book by any definition, just not to my taste. The constant shifts in narrative and timeline kept me from getting engrossed in the story. And I failed to develop any empathy for any of the characters. The plot was fairly interesting and the writing was good, however. But to me, characters that I care about are everything in a story, and you didn't really learn enough about the people in this book to care about them. This book in general just failed to grab me.

Uneasy mix of modern western and conspiracy thriller, helped by strong central characters but hindered by cartoon-like villains. Good pace and interesting plot. Caitlin Strong is a central character that grows through the book and I look forward to the next one. ( )
