'Conrad' is an amusing, sometimes highly eccentric, Edwardian comedy about the perils and gifts of nostalgia. Structured in three acts, it follows a man's nostalgic revisitation of his childhood and youthful loves, to then turn its focus to a reformed music-hall's singer equal nostalgia for her adventurous and colourful past and the encounter between them. If the overall structure is perhaps too obvious and a little clumsy, the book nonetheless offers numerous delights in its account of the minutiae of disappointment: the portrait of the seaside towns, for example, is delightful, as is the motif of the lovers' farewell. The book also has some highly eccentric and hilarious digressions, such an ode to a post-office girl in Bloomsbury and a direct address to his female public. 1911. In his preface Barrie calls Conrad in Quest of His Youth, a sentimental journey. It is the story of a man who attempts to recapture the fleeting pleasures of youth after eighteen years of prosaic existence in an English colony. He wanted to be 19 again and didn't realize it. When he comes suddenly into an inheritance he leaves behind the dull life of duty and starts out to satisfy desire, en route for the past. He begins his quest in the Latin quarter of Paris, but after the long lapse, the pleasures there were ashes on his lips. Then like a refreshing draught came the thought of a boyhood experience at an English watering place with Mary Page, his first love. From this point on we have the true theme of the story, Conrad's attempt to regain youth according to the recipe that a man is young as often as he falls in love.
