Charlotte Zolotow, who died in 2013 at the age of 98, was an American writer, poet, editor, and publisher of many children's books. She, herself, wrote the texts for about 70 picture books. The illustrator, Ben Shecter, studied at The High School of Music and Art and at the Yale Graduate School of Drama. He has written and illustrated many books for young children. Zolotow brought her poetic skills to "The Hating Book". The reviewer for "Publisher's Weekly," said of this work, "When a girl's friend ignores her completely, all bad feelings get out of hand, in this gentle look at friendship." I'm dealing with this exact issue right now. My neighbors seem to have gone cold on me, and my feelings are so hurt I can't even muster the strength to ask them what's going on. Maybe it's nothing, maybe there's a misunderstanding. But even if it's something unfixable, I'd be better off taking the advice of the mother in this story and talking to them. A young girl decides she hates her friend because she has been rude and ignoring her lately. Her mother tells her to ask her friend why. After asking her friend why she has been so mean to her they find out the whole thing has just been a misunderstanding.
