The author is an angry and often self-loathing man, He is driven by demons and finds that as his life is spinning toward premature death and destruction, he must change the obessessions that fuel him. He discovers bicycling and attacks it with vigor. He is too often driven by shame and other negative emotions. In bicycling he does not change those emotions, but redirecects them toward a better goal; a healthier happier goal. He stll does not seem like a nice guy, but at least his is a better person for the journey. ( ) This book is about addiction and obsession. Magnuson goes from being a smoker and alcoholic to cycling addict over night. He substitutes one addiction for the other. For some cyclists, this will be like looking in the mirror and it will be painful at times. I felt bad for his family. Well written. The idea of doing everything "extreme" that seems so prevalent in our culture now is at odds with the philosophy of moderation espoused by Dr. Andrew Weil in Healthy Aging. Obsessive compulsive exercise is actually bad for your health. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
Take one very large guy. Add booze, cigarettes, and an extreme amount of junk food. Mix in a wry, self-effacing wit. Throw in a bike. The result? Heft on Wheels, a potently funny look at turning your life around, one insanely unrealistic goal at a time. Not that long ago, Mike Magnuson was a self-described lummox with a bicycle. In the space of three months, he lost seventy-five pounds, quit smoking, stopped drinking, and morphed from the big guy at the back of the pack into a lean, mean cycling machine. Today, Mike is a 175-pound athlete competing in some of the most difficult one-day racing events in America. This irreverent and inspiring memoir charts every hilarious detail of his transformation, from the horrors of skin-tight XXL biking shorts to the miseries of nicotine withdrawal. Heft on Wheels is an unforgettable book about getting from one place to another, in more ways than one. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
