If there is a more concise and readable book on argumentation out there, I am unaware of it. I picked up this book to help me develop instructional materials on argumentation for advanced high school students. While it is an excellent resource for my endeavor, I think this book belongs, besides Strunk and White's The Elements of Style, on every college student's bookshelf; I wish I'd had it myself during my undergraduate years. Anthony Weston created an indispensable handbook here. It's small, easy to carry, easy to read, and is incredibly useful as a resource to help one hone his or her skills in analyzing the logic of arguments. I strongly recommend keeping a copy of 'A Rulebook for Arguments' around and handy, it could be more frequently useful than one might imagine. Now, to be clear, Weston doesn't go much into giving a list of fallacies. Rather, he delves into structure of arguments and the ways to scrutinize their logic. It is a book of vital lessons in logic. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
A Rulebook for Arguments is a succinct introduction to the art of writing and assessing arguments, organized around specific rules, each illustrated and explained soundly but briefly. This widely popular primer - translated into eight languages - remains the first choice in all disciplines for writers who seek straightforward guidance about how to assess arguments and how to cogently construct them. The fourth edition offers a revamped and more tightly focused approach to extended arguments, a new chapter on oral arguments, and updated examples and topics throughout.
